Good Intentions
Artneuland Gallery, berlin
curator: Yael Katz Ben Shalom
January 2008
This performance is based on Dotan and Perry’s video work ‘Embracement’. Dotan is seating on a pedestal with a wreath of thorns in her lap, holding a ball-shaped object made of bandages.
The bandages are weaved with hand written, isolated sentences taken from Feminist theories. Detached from their original ‘home’ (essay) and relocated in a new context, the text seems like empty clichés. Dotan slowly wraps the written bandages around her body, tightening the thorns to her body. The audience can read only random fragments of the text on the bandage- scroll.
The fragmentation adds to the abstraction quality of the letters, words, sentences, and their original structural meaning. While the thorns and the body slowly disappear into memory, the bandage becomes a cloth like entity that covers the body, the thorns, the wounds and the text underneath it.
