Self Portrait As A Simulacra
live performance at the opening of the new Glasshouse
July 2009
--------------------------------------------------------------------
At the opening event of the new Glasshouse we invited a make-up artist to create wounds and scratches on Lital while the guests are mingling around.
Making the preparation phase the actual performance, is part of questioning the definition of time frame in a performance and the narrative of beginning and end.
During the make-up process, the video that was projected on the wall in front of her was interrupted by slides with questions, giving the situation a feeling of interview or investigation. She had 30 seconds to answer. Sometimes she managed to answer them, sometimes she didn't make it, or just stood up, trying to find words to answer questions that tried to undermine her work during the actual performance. Words that are supposed to give the context to a finished work became the barrier in the actual making of it.
That way the performance was led in 2 dimensions: as a pre-preformance and as a reflection on the performance.
