The work ‘Departure Day’ was filmed on the border between the Israeli Memorial Day and Independence Day. It is a fictional ritual that deals with the basic Israeli nature of longing for the west, heading outwards.
The video starts with a siren. Dotan is standing, wearing a house. She is surrounded by the houses of ‘Neve Shalom’ neigbourhood- one of the first Hebrew neighborhoods in Tel Aviv.
A dog is tied to her hand, sitting by the house. When the siren stops the women house & dog start walking, passing the neighborhood houses, the narrow streets, crossing a bare hill and settling in a park on the grass as a house with an ocean view. Then the scene changes suddenly and she is in the sea, struggling with the waves, struggling to float. Is the departure of the home land becoming the departure of the body as well?
